I’ve slept in a basement for years now and I have grown so accustomed to it that it is incredibly difficult for me to get a good night’s sleep if I travel somewhere where there are any kinds of lights. Hotels can be the worst because oftentimes they have spotlights shining on the building at night and the curtains usually can’t cover the window fully letting light in. Many other times, the doors in a hotel have a large gap between the bottom of the door and the floor letting in light from the hallway. These feel pretty much like someone is shining a flashlight in my eyes. The reason I say this is just to note that I like the darkness when I sleep.
Well, last Sunday, I woke up at around 1 AM (which seems to happen more often now that I’ve gotten a little older). When I woke up, I noticed that the darkness seemed even darker than normal. I try to keep the room as dark as I can get it, but there is still some light that comes in, especially from street lamp outside. But it was pitch black. I checked my phone and realized it wasn’t charging which could only mean one thing...the power was out. All of a sudden, the already dark basement seemed even darker. As I went into the hallway, I had to walk slowly with my hands out because I could see nothing and I didn’t want to hurt myself.
Do you ever feel like your doing this in your life? Do you feel like you need to walk slowly with your hands out because of the darkness? You tread carefully because you really can’t see where you are going. You need a light. You need the Light.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
- John 8:12
When you have light, you walk with confidence. When you have light, you aren’t afraid. That is the confidence you can have in Jesus, that when you walk with Him, you will constantly walk with and in the Light. Let His light show you the way.
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
- Psalm 27:1
