Job Ep. 5: The Divine Council

Job

In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we move deeper into Job 1 by shifting the setting from earth to heaven and reading Job 1:6–12.

This passage introduces what is often called the divine council—a scene in which heavenly beings present themselves before the Lord and the “business of heaven” is carried out. We take time to slow down and explore what this scene is (and is not), drawing on other biblical passages that give us glimpses of God’s throne room, including Isaiah 6 and 1 Kings 22.

Along the way, we ask important questions:

  • What does the Bible mean by a “divine council”?

  • Does God actually need counsel from others?

  • Who are the “sons of God” mentioned in Job 1?

  • How should we understand God’s authority and delegation in these scenes?

Rather than rushing ahead to conclusions, this episode focuses on setting, biblical imagery, and theological framework—helping us read Job 1 more carefully and faithfully before moving on to the conversation that follows.
